Alondra Park Chess Lessons

Our Chess Lessons for Juniors are completely booked. At this time, we don't accept new students. Please inquire via Contact Us when the next opening will be available again. Thank you.

In collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Alondra Park Chess Club is holding chess lessons Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at our regular playing site at 3850 W Manhattan Beach Blvd. in Lawndale, CA. For the time of the big construction project, we meet at the basketball gym at 3353 Redondo Beach Blvd, Lawndale, CA  90504.

Instructor – Matthew G. Robertson, USCF Candidate Master

Lessons are organized in 6-week blocks. Each lesson consists of approximately one hour of guided instructions, followed by one hour of student chess play. The content of the lessons is aimed to prepare new students for their first tournament and to help students that already play in tournament to reach a rating of approximately 1000. The instructions cover of various topic from opening principles, basic tactical themes to endgames, but also included chess history, chess etiquette and tournament rules.

The lessons are very popular and fill up completely. There is a wait list for new students. Priority is given to current students to enroll in the next session. New students are expected to know how the pieces move and have played games before at school or against family members.

There is a $40 registration fee for a set of 6 lessons per student; a second student from the same family can join for $20. If you are not sure if the lessons are right for your child, don’t worry, we offer one free trial lesson for every new student. You only pay, when you think your child can benefit from our lessons. New students and their parents are strongly encouraged to arrive by 6:15 to address any questions.

The tentative schedule for the chess lessons can be found here.

Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own chess set and a spiral-bound notebook for practicing chess notation and/or taking notes.
