The Alondra Park Chess Club is offering group chess lessons for Juniors age 7 to 12 on Mondays 6:30 to 8:30. Lessons are aimed towards beginners and players rated up to 1000 USCF. Knowledge of how the pieces move is required. Lessons are organized in 6-week blocks. Each lesson consists of approximately one hour of guided instructions, followed by one hour of student chess play. The content of the lessons is aimed to prepare new students for their first tournament and to help students that already play in tournament to reach a rating of approximately 1000. The instructions cover of various topic from opening principles, basic tactical themes to endgames, but also included chess history, chess etiquette and tournament rules.
There is a $40 registration fee for participation in each 6-week session. Fees can be paid cash at the club or under the Register tab.

Our regular tournaments are held Wednesdays from 6:15 to 8:30. We play typically 5 or 6-Round Swiss tournaments where on each evening one round of the tournament is played. About 40 to 50 players attend our tournaments. Players can choose between 2 sometimes 3 sections - a " Junior" section intended for juniors, beginners and players up to a USCF rating of 1000 and an "Open" for players above a rating of 1000. Sometimes we add a "Reserve" section for players between 1000 and 1500. The time control is 55 minutes with a 5 seconds delay (G55;d5) for Open and Reserve. Juniors play two games against the same opponent with a time control of G25;d5.
There is a tournament entry fee of $10 for non-member and $5 for club members. a 12-month club membership is $20. Fees and memberships can be paid cash at the club or under the Register tab.
Due to big construction project at Alondra Park, we are currently meeting at the "Gym" at Alondra Park. The Gym is located on the Redondo Beach Blvd side of the park near the pond. The entrance to the parking lot is at the stop light at the intersection of Redondo Beach Blvd and Yukon Avenue.
Our Chess Lessons for Juniors will be held in the Community Room at Alondra Park at 3850 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Lawndale CA from January 26 to March 30, 2026 . The building is located on Manhattan Beach Blvd approximately 0.2 miles east of the Prairie Ave intersection. The parking lot right next to the Community Room is closed. Only street parking is available.
